Orton received 10 staples to his forehead following a series of vicious elbows by his opponent
The brutal and shocking end to Randy Orton's TKO defeat to Brock Lesnar has got many questioning whether WWE SummerSlam 2016 went off script.
After a back and forth bout, including a wild RKO from Orton on the commentators' table, Lesner went on to win the contest with a series of vicious elbows.
Commentator Maura Ranallo said it best when he remarked Lesnar was “turning this into a horror movie" as blood began to poor from Orton's head.
The referee ended the bout and awarded it to Brock.
Orton was then treated by two paramedics while laying motionless on the canvas and had his head stapled following the fight.
WWE.com later released an injury statement on the 36-year-old, it said: "WWE.comhas learned that Randy Orton has received 10 staples to close a laceration on his forehead following the brutal assault by Brock Lesnar that resulted in a TKO at SummerSlam."
The particularly violent ending to the WWE event, which is normally classed as a family entertainment show, has begged the question of whether the former UFC fighter went off script.
So far, no other statement from the WWE has been released.
