Sunderland secure loan signing of Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid
Sunderland have completed their move for Atletico Madrid full-back Javier Manquillo on an initial season-long deal.
The agreement includes an option for the Premier League club to make the move a permanent four-year deal after the completion of the loan.
Sky sources reported on Wednesday that the 22-year-old was closing on the move with manager David Moyes looking to bring in new faces before Tuesday's transfer deadline.
Speaking after Sunderland's 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Cup, assistant manager Paul Bracewell confirmed Manquillo was undergoing a medical at the club's training ground.
Manquillo spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Liverpool but failed to impress, making just 10 league appearances, and the Merseyside club opted to end the full-back's two-year stay after just one year.
The right-back enjoyed a better campaign on loan at Marseille in Ligue 1 last season, making 31 league appearances, but Manquillo proved to be surplus to requirements at Atletico.
The 22-year-old Spaniard has represented his country at youth level up to U21 and has Champions League and Europa League experience with Atletico.
